Boardman, OH Chiropractic Beats Massage for Cervicogenic Headaches

We see a considerable number of folks with headaches in our Boardman, OH office, and Dr. Denise Carradine has been able to support many of them. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 50% of all adults have difficulty with some sort of headache problem, so this actually isn’t a surprise. One of the most typical kinds of headaches which our patients endure is cervicogenic headache which, luckily, chiropractic can often help.

What is a Cervicogenic Headache?

A cervicogenic headache is one that stems from a problem in the cervical spine. It could be generated by an issue with either the spine itself (primarily, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it could be caused by a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine creates constriction or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can contribute to headache pain.

How can you know if the headache you are feeling is a cervicogenic headache? Besides receiving a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a typical symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is sometimes coupled with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

How Chiropractic Helps with Cervicogenic Headaches

Considering cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever problem is causing them is remedied, it is crucial to receive treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an excellent approach, and one that offers a considerable amount of headache pain relief.

In one study reported in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, specialists looked at 80 people who had repeated cervicogenic headaches. One-half got chiropractic care and the other fifty percent underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was evaluated 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was found that chiropractic offered the optimum effects.

In particular, this study revealed that chiropractic adjustments provided patients greater pain relief and lowered the number of headaches that occurred. Furthermore, it also lessened the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
